More than 8,000 former Guatemalan paramilitary group members tried to attack several legislators who blocked a bill that would have provided promised payments to the ex-fighters. Eight lawmakers were escorted out of the congressional building by National Police officers, who shielded them from protesters wielding sticks and machetes in this capital’s historic sector. The former militiamen were using scare tactics to force the legislators to pass a bill proposed by the conservative Patriot Party (PP) and designed to compensate them for working with the army during Guatemala’s 1960-1996 civil war.
