Pakistan’s war against Al-Qaeda is focused on key operatives who are actively planning attacks rather than elusive figurehead Osama bin Laden who appears cut off from operations, analysts say. While US President George W. Bush was quick to hail Pakistan’s breakup of a major Al-Qaeda cell last week, Pakistani officials said the chances of bin Laden being caught ahead of November’s US presidential elections were slim. The key operatives captured in recent weeks in Pakistan and Britain were more significant than bin Laden in the planning of fresh terrorist attacks, although the capture of the Al-Qaeda leader would be a massive symbolic blow to the group and a significant boost to Bush’s re-election effort.
