Some 600 South Korea-based U.S. troops departed for Iraq on Thursday, part of a brigade of 3,600 American forces being redeployed to the Middle East from near South Korea’s border with communist North Korea. Foreign media were invited to the U.S. Air Force base at Osan, south of the capital Seoul, to watch members of the 2nd Brigade of the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division. Filming of the departure of their transport planes was prohibited. South Korea, citing security concerns, has banned journalists from reporting on its planned deployment of 3,000 South Korean troops to Iraq.
