The interim governor of the southern city of Basra was fatally shot by unknown assailants Tuesday as he was heading to work. His assassination followed a confirmation by the government on Monday that a senior Defense Ministry official had been assassinated late Sunday night. Deaths from suicide bombing continued as well. On Monday morning, a tanker truck loaded with explosives blew up near a police station, killing at least nine people, the Health Ministry said. The explosion punched a giant pit into a busy commercial area, blasting away entire rows of auto repair shops and tea stalls and shattering the window panes of apartment buildings nearby.
