Fear and suspicion over doping and terrorism are set to overshadow the problem-plagued 25th summer Olympics which get underway in Athens on August 13. Twenty-eight sports will be held at 35 venues, but even before a single medal has been decided, the Games have been dogged by daily horror stories of more and more drug test failures mostly (but far from exclusively) in track and field. Furthermore, the build-up has been rocked by the astronomical security bill of 1.5 billion dollars, the price of staging the first post-September 11 Games. The Greek organisers, too, have found themselves under regular fire as construction projects fell further behind schedule with the long-running saga over the roof on the centrepiece Olympic Stadium proving acutely embarrassing.
