Police have found no evidence that a plot to overthrow President Carlos Mesa’s government is afoot but remain vigilant regarding threats to disrupt this weekend’s referendum on natural gas, officials told EFE Thursday. The media is highlighting investigations of the alleged plot, in which retired police and military officers were said to be involved, but according to senior Interior Ministry official Gregorio Lanza, “there is no evidence, nothing.” The rumors started when pamphlets surfaced denouncing a coup plot hatched by a group of retired police officers, but authorities are lending them no credence.
