U.S. forces said they captured two Taliban leaders in southern Afghanistan at the weekend, while U.S. Marines moving across a mountainous central province killed three guerrilla commanders. The governor of the southern province of Zabul, meanwhile, said U.S. forces killed five Taliban guerrillas Sunday near the provincial capital of Qalat after a group hiding in a village fired on a U.S. helicopter. Troops from the 20,000-strong U.S.-led force in Afghanistan have mounted operations against guerrillas in southern, eastern and central regions in recent weeks to boost security for September elections, which the militants have vowed to disrupt.
