The leader of the Palestinian uprising, Marwan Barghuti, defiantly vowed that the intifada would triumph as he was handed five life sentences for murder by an Israeli court here. Barghuti’s lawyer said that he would not appeal against the sentence which came after he was found guilty three weeks ago of being directly responsible for four militant attacks in which five people were killed. He was handed two additional 20-year terms by the Tel Aviv district court for being a member of a banned terrorist organisation and for conspiracy to carry out another attack. The Palestinian government denounced the verdict as illegal and called for Barghuti’s immediate release. Barghuti said as he was led away after the 15-minute hearing that the “intifada will triumph”, waving a victory sign. Full Story
