Five civilians and an unknown number of Shiite Muslim fighters were killed in clashes between US troops and the militia of firebrand cleric Moqtada Sadr in the holy city of Kufa, the US military and medical officials said. “There were clashes from 4:00 am to 8:00 am (2400 GMT Wednesday to 0400 GMT Thursday),” said Doctor Mohammed Abdul Khazem at the Furat al-Awsat hospital. “The fighting killed five civilians and wounded nine. There were children among the casualties,” he said. At the Al-Hakim hospital, emergency room doctor Mahdi Khuyer reported another six wounded from the fighting. The US military said in a statement that the clashes broke out as the troops were conducting a search in a school suspected of having been used by members of Sadr’s Mehdi Army to launch mortar attacks.
