THE military reacted strongly to a recent intelligence report revealing that the Abu Sayyaf group, the Jemaah Islamiya (JI) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have allegedly formed a “Death Squad” to mount terror attacks, like bombings, kidnappings, assassinations, extortions and other atrocities in the region. The Southern Command (Southcom) gave its full assurance of providing ample protection to the citizenry Monday, in the report that lawless elements are plotting to sow terror, targeting urban centers like Zamboanga City. Southcom commander Lt. General Roy Kyamko “assured everyone in his Area of Responsibility (AOR) that security measures are in place to counter these terrorist threats coming from the Abu Sayyaf, JI, and other lawless groups.” The information from authorities could have been extracted from Abu Sayyaf suspect Usman Lijal who was arrested last week by the army at their checkpoint in Talon-Talon this city. The intelligence report also mentioned Abu Sayyaf Chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani as the one having entered into an alliance with the JI, both linked to Osama Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda terror network.
