The California Highway Patrol will hire hundreds of officers to help deal with terrorist threats. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger just authorized hiring at least 270 people. Several weeks ago, Schwarzenegger said he did not want to fill the positions because it would further strain the state’s huge budget deficit. CHP Commissioner D.O. “Spike” Helmick said recently the extra demands of protecting California from terrorism and a far-reaching order to leave vacancies unfilled had strained the patrol’s ability to ensure safety on roadways.
