Pakistani security officials believe that a woman sought by the United States amid a new alert about an increased terror threat to high-profile American targets has been underground for more than a year. The whereabouts of Aafia Siddiqui, 32, a former student in Boston who returned to Pakistan shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, have been a mystery since March 2003, when the FBI issued a global alert for her arrest for possible links to Al Qaeda. Aafia’s name resurfaced on Wednesday as top US security officials drew attention to suspected Al Qaeda operatives still at large, amid what Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said was new information that terrorists were planning a high-profile attack.
