Embattled US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld took full responsibility for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US troops and offered a “deep apology” to the victims, as US forces killed 20 of wanted Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr’s militiamen. Rumsfeld, fighting for his job according to US media, said the United States had an obligation to treat prisoners correctly, in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in Washington. “So to those Iraqis who were mistreated by members of the US armed forces, I offer my deepest apology… I feel terrible about what happened to these Iraqi detainees,” he said. “It happened on my watch, and I take full responsibility,” Rumsfeld told lawmakers, adding that the Geneva Conventions apply to all detainees held by US forces in Iraq.
