Hizbollah guerrillas tried to attack an Israeli military position on the border with Lebanon on Thursday, but were thwarted by troops manning the post who opened fire at them, Israel Radio reported. Military sources confirmed that troops had opened fire at “suspicious figures carrying equipment” who approached a border position early on Thursday. But they could not provide further details, saying an investigation into the incident was still under way. It was not immediately clear whether any of the suspicious figures were hit, they said. On Wednesday, Israeli warplanes bombed what the army said were Hizbollah artillery positions in southern Lebanon after the Iranian-backed Lebanese guerrilla group fired anti-aircraft shells at northern Israel.
