KETV NewsWatch 7 has learned that a $11 million Department of Homeland Security building will be built near Omaha’s Eppley Airfield. The 13-acre, 65,000-square foot facility will house prisoners near the intersection of Abbott Drive and Avenue H. It will put Immigration and Naturalization employees from four locations in Omaha under one roof. The building will house citizenship and immigration services and immigration customs enforcement. “This building is being built to meet certain security standards that any immigration, customs office would have,” said Ben Bandanza, with the INS. There will be eight oversized holding cells where men, women and children can be held for up to 12 hours. After 12 hours, the people must be released or transferred to a county jail. There will also be space to interview up to 300 people at once. Full Story
