A Muslim militant who said he wanted to punish the United States and others that “oppress Islam” went on trial Tuesday, accused of involvement in the bombings of two Bali nightclubs and a Jakarta hotel. Jhoni Hendrawan, a 32-year-old trader, sat silently as prosecutors read the charges, which carry a maximum sentence of death under the country’s harsh anti-terror law. Outside court, Hendrawan said he took part in the attacks to punish the United States. “I just surrender my fate to God,” he said. “The important thing for me is to do my best in order to uphold Islam.
