The US Supreme Court is to hear Wednesday two cases of US nationals President George W. Bush has labelled “enemy combatants” in its war on terror, under which they were secretly detained without charge in a military prison. The highest US court will first hear the case of Yaser Esam Hamdi, captured in the company of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan in late 2001, followed by the case of Jose Padilla. Padilla was arrested at Chicago’s airport in May 2002 as he stepped off a flight from Pakistan. He is accused of working with al-Qaeda to set off a “dirty bomb” in the United States. Full Story
