A total of 271 people, excluding coalition forces, have been killed and 793 wounded in Fallujah since US Marines laid siege to the flashpoint city on April 5, interim health minister Khodayir Abbas said. The figure contrasted with earlier reports gathered from hospitals which put the death toll at 600. The updated toll does not include scores of US deaths in and around Fallujah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Baghdad, since US Marines sealed off the Sunni Muslim city on April 5, following the brutal murder of four American civilian contractors on March 31. US forces have given insurgents in Fallujah only days to surrender their weapons, while elsewhere protesters marched through Basra blaming British occupiers for suicide bombings that killed 68 people.
