Mahmoud Zahar, believed by many Palestinians to be the new leader of Hamas in Gaza, is the last remaining founding member of the organisation. All the others who created Hamas in 1988 have since been killed by Israeli security forces, two of them in the past month. Hamas has so far been reluctant to confirm the identity of the new leader for fear of attracting another Israeli assassination operation. But Dr Zahar was named by Palestinians as a potential candidate when the main founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, was assassinated last month. Full Story
