Saudi police on Saturday detained an Islamist reform activist accused of justifying militant violence in the kingdom, an Interior Ministry official said. The official told Reuters Sheikh Saeed al-Zuair, who was held for more than eight years for demanding reforms in the Saudi monarchy, was likely to be charged and prosecuted for instigating violence. Zuair’s son, Mubarak, denied his father had backed militant attacks during a television talk show about Osama bin Laden’s truce proposal on popular Arabic satellite channel Al Jazeera. Saudi Arabia is battling a wave of violence believed to be linked to Saudi-born bin Laden’s al Qaeda network.
