A leader of the Muslim militant group Abu Sayyaf and five of his men were killed during a firefight with government troops on a southern Philippine island today, officials said. A platoon of Philippine Scout Rangers, who had been following the trail of Hamsiraji Sali and his men, caught up with them today on Basilan island, an Abu Sayyaf stronghold about 550 miles south of Manila.
