The arrest of eight young men of Pakistani descent alleged to have been planning a bombing campaign was the result of a “massive multi-agency operation”, a senior counter-terrorist official said yesterday. The anti-terrorist operation, which had been going on for many weeks, involved MI6, the secret intelligence service which operates abroad, and GCHQ, the government’s electronic eavesdropping centre, as well as the domestic security service MI5 and the police. “It is one thing having foreigners doing things against us, but to have our own people – born and bred and raised in the UK – allegedly engaged in preparing a terrorist act is pretty shocking,” said a source familiar with the operation.
