A federal judge on Friday declared unconstitutional a presidential decree that pardoned several high-ranking military officers accused of human rights abuses during Argentina’s Dirty War. The ruling by Judge Rodolfo Canicoba could pave the way for the officers to be tried for atrocities committed during the 1976-83 military dictatorship, said Marcelo Sonvico, an aide to the judge. Sonvico said Argentina’s Supreme Court must now decide whether to uphold the judgment. It wasn’t immediately clear when the high court might take up the issue. If approved, the ruling would enable prosecutors to revive cases against a handful of retired officers already facing judicial scrutiny in other Dirty War-era investigations. Full Story
