Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has set up a body to fight crimes perpetrated on the Internet, his office said Thursday. The Nigerian Cybercrime working group, headed by National Security Adviser Aliyu Gusau, was inaugurated on Wednesday with a mission to curb cybercrime. Nigeria’s international image has suffered badly because of so-called “419” scams, named after the section of the country’s criminal code dealing with fraudulent demands for fees in exchange for non-existent cash transfers. Millions of computer users around the world receive regular e-mail from Nigerian confidence tricksters promising access to huge sums in exchange for victims’ bank details or cash advances. “Internet 419 has already become an embarrassment to the country. 419 by itself has caused us dearly. When you now practise 419 on the Internet, it becomes even more embarrassing,” Obasanjo said. Full Story
