In a setback and rebuke to opponents of the Indian Point nuclear plant in Westchester County, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has pronounced the plant’s two active reactors fit and has moved to reduce their level of oversight to standard from heightened. Neil Sheehan, a spokesman for the commission, which oversees the nation’s nuclear plants, said yesterday that an issue that had remained a concern until the end of 2003 – faulty construction of a control-room wall at Indian Point 2 – had been resolved, paving the way for the reactor to get the commission’s highest rating, which means the lowest level of inspection.
