The Indonesian Supreme Court today reduced the prison sentence of the accused spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States. The decision comes on the eve of a visit to Indonesia by the head of homeland security, Tom Ridge, and brought expressions of extreme disappointment from the American Embassy here. The cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, who was convicted last September on relatively minor immigration charges and sentenced to three years, is likely to be free within a few weeks.
