Iraq’s US-appointed Governing Council has signed an interim constitution at a landmark ceremony in Baghdad. The document, which will steer Iraq towards a democratic future, will take effect from July, when Iraqi sovereignty is restored. Leading Shia Muslim cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has already criticised the constitution, Reuters reported. The ayatollah said it would hamper plans for a permanent constitution in the future.
