The chief minister of Indian Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Syed, escaped unhurt Friday when militants fired two grenades at a public meeting he was attending, police said. But a girl was killed and four people, including a policeman, were wounded in the attack in Beeru, west of the state capital Srinagar. The attackers fled when police guarding the meeting returned fire. A spokesman of Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen, a hardline Kashmiri group, called newspaper offices in Srinagar to say they had carried out the attack. Guerrilla violence in Kashmir has continued unabated despite peace moves by India and Pakistan, who both claim the Himalayan region. Full Story
