Nearly 500 men gathered Wednesday for a memorial service in an upscale area of Pakistan’s capital. They met to remember Abuzar Shamsul Arafeen, 21, who according to his father died fighting to gain Pakistani control of the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir. Arafeen reportedly was killed by the Indian army in the Kashmir Valley last month. Barely an hour earlier, a buoyant Pakistani Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar spoke about reconciliation between India and Pakistan. ”We hope that this road map will eventually lead to the settlement of all outstanding disputes between India and Pakistan and in the direction of durable peace,” Khokhar said at the end of three days of bilateral talks — the first such dialogue in five years.
