Relatives demanded a prisoner swap with the rebels, and criticized perceived government inaction. Hundreds of supporters — including Rome’s mayor Walter Veltroni — left a painted star on a Bogota sidewalk in Betancourt’s honor. In Paris, where the dual French-Colombian national enjoys near-celebrity status, a giant portrait of Betancourt was draped down the facade of city hall.
