French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin has said ending the conflict in western Sudan is critical for regional stability. After visiting a refugee camp in eastern Chad, near the Sudanese border, Mr de Villepin called for more international emergency aid for Darfur. He has now arrived in Khartoum and is expected to discuss the conflict with President Omar al-Bashir. More than 600,000 have fled clashes, with some 100,000 crossing into Chad. Speaking after meeting the Chadian president, Mr de Villepin urged regional and international leaders to play a greater role in trying to resolve the conflict. Earlier he told a crowd at a refugee camp in eastern Chad that: “Time is running out… Like all other providers of aid, we want to get moving to satisfy these needs before the start of the rainy season in June.” Full Story
