ALTHOUGH new viruses continue to appear regularly, technologies used by the antivirus industry haven’t changed much in recent years. So, if the basic approach is well-understood, why do viruses continue to be such a problem?
The answer is simple: users simply don’t take the trouble to keep their software up to date. “By the time a virus hits the desktop, it’s too late,” says Garry Sexton, Asia-Pacific vice-president of software developer Brightmail. “Antivirus relies on the user updating the definition file every day, and that simply hasn’t happened.” Full Story
