Britain’s attorney general defended the government’s tough anti-terrorism laws Wednesday, saying it was fair to restrict some legal rights to guard against violent attacks. Attorney General Lord Goldsmith emphasized that democracies must protect suspects’ rights, but he said Britain was right to approve a law allowing some foreign terror suspects to be detained indefinitely without charge or trial. He said the law contained many safeguards — including yearly review of its implementation, a built-in expiration date and the right of appeal for detainees — and was necessary to protect Britons’ security.
