A Russian presidential candidate who vanished for five days suggested Wednesday that for at least part of his absence, he was hiding in Ukraine from shadowy operatives. In a rambling, hourlong radio interview, Rybkin announced “a weeklong time-out” to decide on the future of his candidacy in the March 14 election, which President Vladimir Putin is expected to win easily. Rybkin, a long-shot candidate and fierce Kremlin critic, resurfaced in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, on Tuesday and returned to Moscow to a torrent of questions about what happened since he was last seen by his bodyguard and driver outside his home on Thursday night.
