Insurgent violence will escalate before the United States returns Iraq’s sovereignty to its people, the commander of US forces in Iraq predicted, adding that civil war was possible but unlikely. “I think that, given a … bad series of events that pit communities against one another, it would be possible to move toward civil war but I think it is unlikely,” General John Abizaid told defense reporters.
