Turkey would like the United States to mediate reunification talks in Cyprus so the island’s Greek and Turkish factions can reach an agreement by May, a source close to the Turkish government said. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan “indicated to the UN secretary general in Davos (Switzerland) that a new momentum was needed” to renew talks between the Mediterranean island’s Greek and Turkish communities, the source said. Cyprus was split between Turkish and Greek sections in 1974, when Turkey invaded the northern part of the country to counter an attempt by Greek Cypriots to unify the island with Greece. Full Story
