The Mexican Army announced Tuesday that its troops had arrested Javier Torres Felix, an alleged leader of one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in western Mexico. Torres Felix, reputedly a top lieutenant of the Mayo Zambada drug cartel, was one of the main targets of a joint U.S.-Mexico investigation in July known as “Operation Trifecta.” He is wanted in the United States on a federal indictment issued in January which charges Torres Felix and reputed cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada with cocaine trafficking conspiracy charges. Speaking to reporters at the country’s main military base in Mexico City, Defense Secretary Gerardo Clemente Vega said he believes that Torres’ arrest will help reduce or end a recent wave of dozens of murders in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa.
