Ivorian Rebels Say Ready to Disarm But Wary

Ivory Coast’s rebels say they are ready to disarm but warn it will be a long and difficult path unless their political demands are met and fighters’ confidence in the process is boosted. One of the main sites chosen to disarm at least 9,000 rebels, a military camp outside rebel-held Seguela, is far from ready with mango plants climbing up a basketball hoop, tumbledown dormitories and an abandoned medical center. The site’s lack of readiness mirrors the reticence of rebel leaders to lay down their guns before political aims are met. “We entered voluntarily into the disarmament process but major political conditions must be fulfilled if we want to carry it out successfully,” said rebel commander Ahmadou Silue.
