our people were killed and dozens were wounded today when a bomb exploded on a busy street outside a Shiite mosque after Friday prayers in Baquba, about 40 miles north of Baghdad, an American military official said. Some news agency reports put the death toll at five or six. Baquba is in a largely Sunni Muslim area, and the attack is a further indication of the depth of religious and political animosity in Iraq. A car bomb outside the main mosque in the Shiite holy city of Najaf last August killed more than 80 people, including a senior Shiite cleric. Increased violence between different religious and political groups could undermine the efforts of the United States to pull together a democratic government in Iraq, which for many years under Saddam Hussein was ruled by the minority Sunnis.
