Court documents show a former Montrealer in detention in Guantanamo Bay was a close friend of convicted bomb plotter Ahmed Ressam, according to The Globe and Mail. Algerian-born Ahcene Zemiri, 36, reportedly helped Ressam with an attempt to blow up Los Angeles International Airport by giving him $3,500 and offering a video camera as “camouflage,” court testimony alleges. Ressam also asked Zemiri, who he called a close friend, to find him a pistol, a silencer and grenades. “He was aware you were about to commit a terrorist act on United States soil, correct?” Ressam was asked in a U.S. court in 2001. “Yes, he knew that I was going to America to carry out a job,” replied Ressam, who trained in an al Qaeda camp in Afghanistan.
