A 40-year-old self-appointed IT security researcher in Japan is under investigation by the government for gaining unauthorised access to a government agency Web site. The man, who has been identified as `Office,’ by Japanese government officials, was this week accused of accessing a secure area of the Association of Copyright for Computer Software. Reporting on the investigation, the Asahi Shimbun says the researcher used a vulnerability in the common gateway interface (CGI) of the site to gain access to a private area. Although the act of accessing the secure area itself may not have been illegal, the newspaper says that `Office’ copied information on individuals from the site and later passed that data on, something which the paper says may have been illegal.
