It may not have been the crime of the ages, but it was a remarkable feat. A 55-seat private bus was stolen from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in broad daylight on Sunday — backed right out of the terminal and driven away. It was seven hours before the police knew it was gone. When it was finally found, the police said a drunken former bus driver was found sitting behind the wheel outside Kennedy International Airport, a can of malt liquor on the console. The tale also triggered more serious questions. At a time of renewed terror warnings, some found it unsettling to know that a bus — surely a formidable weapon in the hands of a terrorist — could be stolen in Midtown Manhattan and remain undetected for so long.
