With the city at a heightened state of alert, unprecedented security measures will be in place on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, where revelers will have to pass through metal detectors borrowed from city schools for the night, officials said yesterday. About 240 metal detectors, roughly twice as many as the Police Department had in place last year, will be used to screen the hundreds of thousands of people who are expected to come watch the ball drop, one official said. The police are telling those who plan to attend to leave bags and backpacks at home, and revelers will be screened as they enter a series of fenced areas in Times Square from side streets, officials said.
