Israeli security forces captured a senior Hamas official in the West Bank during raids conducted early Sunday, according to Israeli news reports and the Hamas leader’s brother. The arrested man, Adnan Asfour, 39, had become a spokesman for Hamas in the West Bank in the last few months, after the arrests of other members of the group by Israeli security forces. An Israeli Defense Forces spokesman confirmed Mr. Asfour’s arrest and described him as the leader of Hamas in Nablus, a West Bank town seen as an important Hamas center. Mr. Asfour’s brother, Said Asfour, said Mr. Asfour was taken away at 2 a.m. on Sunday after Israeli soldiers surrounded the apartment building where he was visiting and ordered all of its occupants to evacuate.
