Four men armed with pistols shot and killed Franciscan friar Guillermo Salgado early Thursday while stealing the Christmas bonuses for workers at a home for the elderly in eastern Honduras. “The thieves silently entered Salgado’s bedroom. He awoke, struggled with the men and ran down a hall where he was hit by bullets,” police Commissioner Gustavo Fajardo told the Associated Press. The center, which houses 100 people, is located in the Olancho province city of Juticalpa, about 100 miles east of the capital. The region of ranch lands and forests is also noted for disputes over land and timber and for banditry. A resident of the home was slightly wounded by a gunshot after hearing cries and going to investigate. Fajardo said a police search outside the rest home turned up a small safe that had been forced open. He said Fajardo had used it to store salaries for workers and petty cash. The archbishop of Juticalpa, Thomas Moldoon, said $3,000 for the workers’ Christmas bonuses had been taken. Full Story
