A shadowy campaign of killings that began 28 years ago with the slaying of the CIA station chief in Athens ended Wednesday with the sentencing of the leader of the November 17 terrorist group and five of his gunmen to life imprisonment. The Socialist government – eager to show it can safeguard next year’s Olympics – said a ruling by an anti-terrorism tribunal closed a tumultuous chapter in Greek history. For years, the United States and other countries had criticized Greece for its inability to stop the group. In Washington, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said “we hope and expect the sentences will be fully carried out.” “Now this chapter has come to an end, but we believe it’s proper and important to focus on the suffering and the trauma of the victims and their families,” Boucher said.
