The Indonesian military is pursuing a campaign of killings, kidnappings and beatings of civilians in Aceh province where they are hunting down separatist rebels, an international rights group said. Acehnese refugees interviewed in Malaysia said Indonesian security forces were guilty of gross human rights abuses, including extrajudicial executions, forced disappearences, beatings and arbitrary arrests, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report released Wednesday. “Every Acehnese we interviewed had a story of abuse to tell,” said Brad Adams, the group’s executive director for Asia. “We fear that the abuses we have uncovered against the civilian population may be just the tip of the iceberg,” Adams said.
