At least nine people have been killed in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, in the worst violence since United Nations peacekeepers arrived in August. The clashes reportedly pitted UN troops against militiamen demanding immediate payment for giving up their guns. If confirmed, it would be the first time members of the 4,500-strong UN force have been involved in fighting. Monrovia has been calm since the UN troops deployed to end a 14-year civil war but other areas remain unstable. The BBC’s Jonathan Paye-Layleh says the bodies of those killed appeared to be those of militiamen who had fought for former President Charles Taylor.
