A United Nations force in Liberia plans to use landing craft to quickly deploy thousands of troops tasked with restoring order in the West African country’s anarchic interior. Designed for storming beaches, the vessels will allow troops to reach coastal towns virtually cut off from vehicle transport by poor roads and the threat of ambush by marauding militiamen. Placing troops throughout Liberia is regarded as vital to shoring up an August peace deal between government and rebels, aimed at ending a 14-year cycle of violence that has destabilized the region.
