Turkey officially identified the suicide bombers in the Istanbul synagogue attacks as two young Turks, and said they may have been linked to the al-Qaeda terror network. “It has been determined that both incidents were suicide attacks carried out by the detonation of a large amount of explosives laden on pickup trucks, Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler told reporters Wednesday in the first official statement on Saturday’s the bombings. With the help of DNA testing, the assailants who detonated the car bombs while driving past the Neve Shalom and Beth Israel synagogues during Sabbath prayers were identified respectively as Gokhan Elaltuntas, 22, and Mesut Cabuk, 29, the governor said. The blasts killed 25 people, including the two bombers, injured 303 others and caused vast destruction in the historical heart of Istanbul, where the city’s tiny Jewish community has lived in peace with its Muslim neighbors for centuries.
